It is what it is not
The suspension of time in the work of Bretislav Maly

The monochrome pieces of the Czech artist Bretislav Maly at first sight appear to be a form of abstract painting. Maly´s works of the last year and a half are much more self-referential than his previous ones (output sounds a bit sober, very much like “production”, but you choose), which dealt more with the inner space and structure of paintings. To speak of abstraction or abstract painting in this place would not only be a reduction of content but also a misunderstanding of theme, since Maly is in fact creating paintings that long to become an object. Through a different way of seeing it seems that the artist is building objects that are evidently pictorial to the viewer. Maly’s (I think the sign shoud be ’ instead of ´, i changed it in the rest of the text, if you agree, sorry, if I am wrong) objects form a link between two- and three-dimensionality, they present the viewer with questions about a painting’s ontology or the status of its Being. (just the dot was missing)
More than a year and a half—since the beginning of the series Inside Colour, to be precise—Maly has been working with a special, almost palimpsest-like, formation of a painting. The only pigment, the only colour he uses, is graphite, poured in layers into resin, with each layer polished after it has dried over. The result is a highly reflective area, which has the capacity to aesthetically integrate, by way of mirroring, the space that surrounds the painting. However, these painting are not merely black mirrors. The reflections on the painting’s surface are too idiosyncratic, too different, and too irregular. Moreover, graphite applied in layers maintains its anthracite hue, so the body of the painting, which often abandons the square shape, betrays a metallic inclination to becoming an object.
The process of painting, of applying a layer after layer of graphite, drying and polishing it, plays a decisive role in the appearance of individual works. Maly’s pictorial objects do not address just visual and spatial questions, but they deal with time dimension, too. Each of his objects accumulates in its layered, palimpsest-like structure time in itself. Hence the paintings of Maly emphasize the aspects of process and enrich an object with time (maybe a bit stronger: with a temporal dimension, but you choose).
The point with the work of Bretislav Maly is not only whether it is a painting or an object, but also where the painting is „happening“. In the painting, or on (reads a bit clearer in italic letters, but you
choose) the painting in the sense of the paint itself? Or only on the painting in the form of reflections, in the eye of the beholder? Apart from these ontological questions it is possible to read this reflective painting as a non-painting—it refuses sight: it refuses immersion into the painting and in a way casts a look back at the viewer. From an epistemological point of view it in fact challenges the wish to see and, through seeing, to comprehend.
Looking at the pictorial objects of Maly it sems as though the paintings’ fringes question their own rendition. Maly creates a medium built of several layers of canvas that in no way hides its structural or technological foundation. On the contrary, the layers of canvas, some of which are shredded at the edges, resemble a damaged (maybe better: nealy damaged. damaged sounds quite dramatic, more than in german) canvas body and, due to their metallic shine, give an alien, almost android-like, impression.
In one of his most recent pictorial objects Situation (2022) the artist combines pictoriality and object-ness in a radical way. While Maly discloses the welded inner structure of the painting on the right side, on the left side he simply bends the painting’s area round the corner. The painting is torn on the right and bent on the left, hence becoming something else. The same is happening with the ontology of the painting—looking at the painting from left or from right offers different readings.
The painting’s welded supports, visible in many of Maly’s works from the side or from the bottom, disrupt the painting’s area and its aesthetical autonomy. Metal elements have a reinforcing function, yet, at the same time, Maly frees them of this merely supportive role, letting them become aesthetical co-players in the story that unfolds on the painting’s surface. This dialectics of opposing autonomies of pictoriality and object-ness infuses Maly’s works with inner aesthetical tension. The perceptible ambivalence is intentionally developed by Maly, making each of his works a perceptive channel of interpretation for both the picture and the object. It is therefore misleading to think about a piece by Maly in terms of an either-a-painting-or-an-object dichotomy, rather, it is necessary to see it as both a painting and an object.
In the case of Four Situations (2022), Maly confronts the viewer with a group of four portrait-sized paintings whose shared space enables them to comment on one another. It seems as though the pictoriality of these paintings is disrupted by object-ness leaking through the inside or the bottom. While the canvas of the pieces on the left is tight and stretched, which brings them close to being paintings, the pieces on the right have the canvas reaching out of the surface, thus creating a relief.
This juxtapositioning allows the pieces to thematise the dimension of time: they work like snapshots of four different stages of the creative process.
Maly presents the viewer with a set of aesthetical contradictions where the seemingly same and similar eventually appears as dissimilar and different. Maly’s work with materials is in no way artistically egoistic. He does not attempt to imprint his self into the material. The artist rather creates almost laboratory conditions to facilitate in his current work the meeting of materials with other aspects of the creative process. The artistic output here lies more in the creative activity itself; in the setting of work conditions that specifically define an artistic idiom.
For the most recent of works, Line (2022), Maly chose an extreme form of painting. The piece is stretched out to the height of three meters and resembles almost the shape of a line. Yet the artist treats this metal-like object as if it were the vessel of the painting. The radical narrowing of the painting’s area is in a certain way unsettling, perhaps even depressing (depressing sounds a bit psychological to me, maybe the term uncanny?, just an idea of a non-native of course, you choose). In the wake of postminimalism this towering pictorial object almost gains the a

Malého obrazy tudíž zviditelňují aspekty procesu a vpisují čas do objektu.
Umělec spíše vytváří podmínky, téměř laboratorní a modelové, aby umožnil ve své aktuální tvorbě potkávání materiálu s dalšími procesně důležitými aspekty.
